A Reading First

I've been reading so many great books with my little ones lately, and lots of reviews are in the works. While I'm working on those, I wanted to share a fun "reading first" in my house.

Last night, my 3 1/2 year old daughter asked if she could read her baby brother a book. She sat down on the floor with him and pulled out Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and started "reading" it to him word for word. While she can't really read, she has the words to a few books memorized and loves to show off her reading skills.

The baby was entranced by his big sister and stared at her while she read the entire book.  I was such a proud momma watching this wonderful literary exchange between the two.

What about you? Do you have stories of "reading firsts" with your children?

  1. That is one of those scenes I am looking forward to most about having a second little one arriving soon!! In fact, I remember when I first got pregnant, we would sort of joke with our son that he could read board books to the new baby. Then, boom, he started reading really well. I swear it was an impetus for him too. :) I hope you get some photos!

  2. Congratulations on the pending arrival of your little one. My son is at the age where he's really starting to interact and soak things up, and it was really heartwarming to see this interaction between the two.

  3. Oh it is lovely, isn't it!

My 7-year-old often reads to her 5-year-old and 19-month-old sisters, but a few days ago the middle child, who's preschool still and I thought not really reading, sat the littlest one down on her knee and read her Put Me in the Zoo. Most of it was from memory but I saw her sounding out a few words and getting them right.

Naturally, the toddler was entranced and demanded "A-gain! A-gain!" as soon as it was done ;-)

  4. How incredibly sweet. I don't have any kids of my own, but as a teacher I can tell you that Brown Bear is one of the titles that many kids came in having memorized. There's some special magic in the book and the effect it has in children.
