Library Loot

My little one has been sick all week. Today, she's feeling better and, according to the doctor, no longer contagious. We were both a little stir crazy, so we went to the library. This time, I let her choose some of her own books just to see what caught her eye.

Here's what she chose:

The Cats ABC book was a given, since she LOVES cats. The others were kind of random, but interesting choices. Once she realized how fun it was to pull books off the shelf and put them in the bag, she went a little crazy, so I had to put a lot of books back.

Here are my children's literature choices:

I cleaned the library out of Melanie Watt's books because I haven't read any of her books, and I chose the Raucous Royals because it just looked fun.

Finally, here were my adult book picks.

White Tiger and A Fraction of the Whole are shortlisted for the 2008 Man Booker Prize. I'm a bit of a "Book Awards Groupie" because I often get overwhelmed with making book choices. I figure that if they're nominated for an award, SOMEBODY liked them. I chose Netherland because I've read lots of reviews and wanted to see what all of the hype was about. Finally, I chose The Handmaid's Tale because my friend Cindy told me I should read it, especially given the fact that I haven't read any Atwood books.

I also saw that next weekend my library is having a used book sale. $5 for a bag of books. I'm so there.

Yay books!

  1. What a great selection! I just wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your book choice from the library shown in your post.

My wife and have four children seven and under so we clean-out the local library weekly. As I publish a number of literary award sites around the world, we always aim for award winners too. You have picked-out some gorgeous titles.

I am envious that you found the Melanie Watts titles as she regularly picks up awards in her native Canada but I haven't seen her books much here in Australia. I know our little ones would love them.

A Fraction of the Whole and White Tiger are both on my 'to read' having been short listed for the Booker and Netherlands has been well reviewed and will have it's day in the sun. Currently reading The Wondrous Life of Oscar Diaz, So many great books, such little time!

Anyway- time to read bed time stories....

  3. I loved The Handmaid's Tale. When I was in college it was a required read for one of my classes and I was a bit apprehensive. I gave it a try and couldn't put it down. I loved the symbolism.
    I hope you enjoy!

  4. Crazy Beautiful Stranger--
I actually started reading The Handmaid's Tale last night and had to force myself to put it down. I can't wait to get home tonight and continue reading it.
