Review FAQs

I get lots of questions about the books I review, my review policy, etc., so here are answers to many of those questions. If you are an author or publisher, and would like me to consider a book for review, please email me a description of the book at thewellreadchild AT gmail DOT com.

What types of books do you review?
I review board books, picture books, middle grade, and young adult literature. I also review parenting books and books that contain resources for parents and teachers. My goal is to review a diverse set of books for different interests and reading and age levels, and I try to review a variety of books. 

I review both fiction and nonfiction. I often choose not to review books that have a strong "message." For fiction, the books I review the most have a strong story and equally strong characters. For nonfiction, the books I tend to review also tell a story, have engaging photographs and/or illustrations, and don't just list facts. I seek out books that feature diverse characters and cultures.


Do you review PDFs or ebooks?
No. I do not accept PDFs or ebooks for review. Part of the magic of reading is being able to flip through books and devour the material, especially if it's a book with illustrations.

Can you guarantee a review?
No. I try to review every book I read, but sometimes I choose not to review a book because it does not fit within The Well-Read Child's mission. I only spend time reviewing books that I like or books about which I have something to say. I'm always honest in my reviews, so you may expect to see negative reviews from time to time.


Do you interview authors and illustrators?
Yes, I interview authors and illustrators and participate in blog tours. If you're interested in being a stop on The Well-Read Child, please email me. I appreciate as much advance notice as possible.
